My Mom Saves

I was thinking the other day about little things I've figured out that have made my life WAY easier. The funny thing about giving "mom tips" is that nobody's kids react the same. Some things that work for other moms have no effect on my kids. Still, here are some things I'm super grateful for:

  • Bendy straws. I use these all the time. I buy the take & toss cups that come with straws, but I use bendy straws with them because then the boys don't turn the cups upside down to get the stuff out. I know eventually they'll figure out how to hold a cup without a bendy straw, but for the moment I try to have a few stashed in my diaper bag for when we got out. For example, when going to Costco I usually buy a berry smoothie, have it split into two cups, get my trusty bendy straws out, and viola--kids who are busy while I shop

  • Stick blenders. I'm sure you all know about my love affair with stick blenders. The boys are periodically terrible eaters, but they love shakes. Gage's fav is a banana-peanut butter-honey-milk shake, that is easy and full of calories. Esp. great on Sundays, when church is from 11-2 and lunch is pretty impossible

  • Aveeno continuous spray sunblock. This is a new one. We tried the Banana Boat sprays last year, but no success. Water Babies stunk. But Aveeno...ah, finally one that works! It sprays & dries super fast, so no wrestling the kids. AND, it doesn't seem to irritate them. Which is a big boon. We avoided the sun quite a bit last year, because Reid especially would inevitably rub sunblock in his eyes.

  • Baseball caps. The boys hate sun in their eyes. We bought some spongebob pirate hats a few weeks ago, and they have been a huge success. The boys leave them on because they can see better.

I've got other stuff I can't do without, but that is the list today. Meanwhile...

I'm apparently ridiculous in my craving for cold things. Last pregnancy it was popsicles, but this time it's ice. Maybe that is related to the difficulty of always eating popsicles around toddlers? Anyhow, I've been buying cubed ice and running it through the crusher on our fridge because we don't have a water hook-up in the spot the fridge is in, despite the fridges built-in water dispenser. Collin, you'd better not read this next part--it will probably cause pain to all you dentist-types out there. I bought a 7lb. bag of ice last Monday. Weds, Nick stopped and bought me two more 7 lb. bags because I was out. I was out again by last night. If you're keeping track, that means I went through around 21 lbs of ice between Monday night and Sunday evening. Nick doesn't eat ice, and the boys contribution is minimal. At least I'm hydrated, right?

The boys are either super cranky or super cute lately. Gage has been having some kind of infection/reaction in his eyes, but it is apparently not contagious because Reid hasn't picked it up. He is finally looking better today, but it has been around for almost 2 weeks. We did take him to the Dr. midstream, but since he has had no discharge of any kind (no tearing, not really rubbing, no goop in the mornings, etc.) the Dr didn't give us lots of insight. We tried an antibiotic, but I think all it did was irritate his eyes worse. So that's why his eyes look so red in some of the pics.

This is a short video of the boys "dancing" along with the Romeo & Juliet ballet that was on PBS.

That same night they were getting a kick out of getting their pics taken. We've got a bunch of cute ones.

Oh yeah, Reid hit his eye on the table, because you know, it had been a month since his last black eye. It looks real pretty today....

The Colonel

So we went to eat at KFC a few days ago and Gage made my day.

Gage: Bad guy. (Pointing to a drawing of the colonel on the drink cups. For reference, since watching Disney's Aladin, the twins think all people with goatees are "bad guys.")
Me: No. That's Colonel Sanders. He made the food.
Gage: ...Hungry bad guy?

We went to a few yard sales on Saturday and found this little rocking horse. The boys have been having fun with it as you can see from Gage's picture.

Reid likes the horse too. Notice Gage in the background being a dinosaur.

More cowboys and dinosaurs.

Airplanes

The boys have really gotten into airplanes lately, and Janine has been encouraging it (she is a Skousen you know). Both Reid and Gage can already identify more planes than I can. I'm going to post a few videos that show their progression of knowledge. You'll notice all the videos are of Reid because he is the one who likes to sit around and name them. You can, however, hear Gage shouting them out in the background when he feels the inclination.

The boys are getting over their illnesses and have been better behaved the past few days. We are cautiously optimistic life will be more normal in the near future. Thank heaven. There are times when raising kids is a matter of survival only (theirs and ours ;), and the past month has been one of those times.
